Accepting the golden statuette, the actress said<\/a> a few phrases in the Black Foot language of the Indian Reservation in Montana where she grew up, thanked her mother for working tirelessly to find a teacher of that language for their school.<\/p>\n

The director had suggested she take inspiration from Olivia de Havilland in the 1949 film The Heiress<\/em><\/a>, directed by William Wyler from Henry James\u2019s 1880 novel Washington Square<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Lily explains: “In playing a traditional woman from the Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma, I also wanted to fill the void caused by the lack of Native American leading actresses during the heyday of Hollywood cinema in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. The Osage women had the same grace and kingship as the classic actresses. While Catherine as played by Olivia de Havilland was part of an oppressive patriarchal society, where women were considered worthless, the wife I play came from a matriarchal community, where women controlled finances and property, were loved and respected, and families celebrated the birth of a daughter. But eventually, when Montgomery Clift knocks on the door, Catherine doesn’t open it, locks it, and climbs the stairs. And Mollie walks out of the room, realizing that Ernest lied to her.”<\/p>\n
